Sunshine North is a settled post war suburb on generous blocks, and the two things that define an EV charger job here are distance and age. The distance from the meter box to wherever the car actually parks, and the age of the board it has to connect to.

The short answer

EV charger installation in Sunshine North costs $1,200 to $2,200 for a single phase 7kW unit, plus $800 to $2,500 where the original board needs replacing, which is the norm rather than the exception here. Large post war blocks mean the car often parks near a rear shed or workshop, so the job is frequently a submain with trenching rather than a short circuit. A 7.4kW charger adds roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour.

These are the blocks with sheds, workshops and long rear yards. A lot of them already have some form of power out the back, and whether that supply is any good is the first thing we test, because it can take a four figure number off the quote.

Test the existing shed supply before pricing a new one

Most Sunshine North properties with a shed or workshop have power out there already. What varies enormously is whether it was installed by an electrician or by a previous owner with a spare roll of cable.

We test the submain size, its protection, its earthing arrangement and the voltage drop over the run before quoting anything. Where the existing supply is adequately sized and correctly protected, the charger install becomes a simple subboard addition at the shed end. Where it is not, we price a new submain honestly rather than connecting a car to something undersized.

  • Adequately sized submain

    Best case. A subboard at the shed and a short charger circuit from it, at the lower end of the price range.

  • Undersized or unprotected

    Has to be replaced. Underground conduit is typically $60 to $120 per metre depending on the surface crossed.

  • No shed power at all

    A full submain plus subboard, which is also the moment to sort lighting, power points and a welder circuit while the trench is open.

Original boards, and why they come first

Original switchboards and original wiring are the norm rather than the exception in the un-renovated Sunshine North stock. Rewireable fuses, no residual current protection, and a main switch that has no headroom for a 32A continuous load.

The board comes first, at $800 to $3,500 depending on the meter panel and the consumer mains. In a house of this age that spend does far more than enable a car. It puts residual current protection across every circuit in a property that has never had it, which is the single most valuable electrical improvement available here.

Big roofs, real solar, useful surplus

Broad single storey tiled roofs with generous unshaded area are common in Sunshine North, and plenty of homes carry 6.6kW or larger systems as a result. That makes solar charging genuinely viable rather than theoretical.

A smart charger with a current transformer on the main supply diverts surplus generation to the car instead of exporting it. On a clear day with a well sized array there is often 3 to 5kW available in the middle of the day. It works best for households with someone home or a car that sits on weekends, and we set both solar and off peak modes up at commissioning.

What single phase gives you, and why that is enough

Sunshine North is single phase residential supply on the Jemena network. That puts the ceiling at 32A and about 7.4kW, which is 40 to 50km of range per hour. Eight hours overnight adds 320 to 400km, which covers virtually any suburban driving pattern with room to spare.

Three phase does turn up occasionally on properties that once ran serious workshop equipment out the back, and where it already exists a 22kW capable charger at $2,500 to $3,000 plus is worth discussing. Converting a single phase supply purely for charging speed is not something we would recommend to a household with one car and a driveway.

What does matter on a long block is voltage drop. A charger sitting at full current for eight hours at the end of a forty metre run is exactly the load that exposes an undersized cable, so the calculation gets done properly rather than eyeballed. That is often why our quote specifies a larger cable than a cheaper one does.

Paperwork and what you are left with

EV charging equipment is prescribed electrical work. The charger goes on a dedicated final subcircuit with a correctly rated breaker and RCD protection suited to DC leakage under AS/NZS 3000, installed by a licensed Registered Electrical Contractor.

You finish with a Certificate of Electrical Safety issued through REC 37223, commissioning details showing the current the unit was set to and tested at, and a 100% workmanship guarantee on top of the manufacturer warranty. Keep the certificate with your house records, because manufacturers ask for it on warranty claims and buyers ask for it later.

  • Big blocks with rear sheds mean a large share of jobs here are submains rather than simple circuits. Testing the existing shed supply first is the single biggest cost saver available in this suburb.
  • Original boards and original wiring are the default in the un-renovated stock, so the board replacement is usually part of the project rather than an occasional extra.
  • Broad unshaded tiled roofs make solar systems here genuinely large, so surplus solar charging works in practice and a smart charger earns its extra cost.
  • Workshop properties occasionally retain three phase supply from previous owners. It is worth a look in the meter box before assuming a 7.4kW ceiling on a block with a serious shed.
