Electrician in North Geelong
North Geelong is a small residential pocket of 1920s to 1960s weatherboard and brick set among 1860s subdivisions and a large proportion of industrial land. Osborne House, the saleyards, Federal Mills and Corio Quay are the landmarks, and they tell you what the suburb mostly does.

The short answer
Pivot Trade Services is a licensed electrician working in North Geelong 3215 under REC 37223, about 55km from our Altona workshop. We cover three phase work, switchboards, safety switches, fault finding, power points, lighting, smoke alarms and commercial solar. North Geelong is on the Powercor network. It is the most industrial suburb in the region, so a large share of the work here is three phase, and the wide span warehouse roofs carry commercial arrays rather than domestic ones.

From one of our jobs
Every circuit labelled before we hand it back
Photographed on site in Melbourne’s west. REC 37223.
That mix means we get two very different jobs here. One is a modest older house on a 450 to 650 square metre block that needs its protection brought up to standard. The other is a warehouse or a business park tenancy on three phase, with distribution that predates modern standards and a roof big enough to be worth covering in panels.
Three phase is the default, not the exception
In most Geelong suburbs three phase is something we check for. In North Geelong it is what we expect. Workshops, warehouses, cool rooms, compressors, welders and machinery all sit on three phase supplies, and the questions are about phase balance, motor circuit protection and whether the existing distribution can carry another machine.
Older industrial buildings here also carry older distribution. Federal Mills alone supports over a thousand jobs on a restored industrial site, and buildings of that age often have switchgear and sub mains installed under standards that have since moved on. It is usually serviceable and usually undocumented, and the first useful thing we do is establish what feeds what.
Motor circuits
Starting current, protection selection and cable size for machinery are a different calculation to a domestic circuit.
Phase balance
A badly loaded three phase supply is common in older industrial buildings and is cheaper to correct than to feed around.
Distribution mapping
On an older site we identify and label what each board and sub main actually serves before adding to it.
Wide span warehouse roofs are the best solar in the region
The warehouse and industrial roofs in North Geelong are the best commercial solar real estate anywhere in the region. Wide unbroken spans, no residential shading, and a daytime load profile that matches generation almost perfectly, because a business consuming what it produces is worth far more than exporting it.
The engineering is different to a house. Structural capacity of the purlins, roof sheet condition and fixing method, DC run lengths across a long roof, inverter placement and switchboard capacity all get assessed before a layout is drawn. Powercor handles the connection here as it does in our own area, and larger systems have their own approval path with real lead times.
Structural check
Purlin spacing and sheet condition decide what a warehouse roof can actually carry, and that is checked first.
Self consumption
A business using its own generation through the working day gets a far better return than one exporting it.
Connection lead time
Larger commercial connections take longer to approve, so we start that paperwork early rather than at installation.
Salt and dust together on outdoor equipment
The suburb fronts Corio Bay with the port and the saleyards alongside, so outdoor equipment gets salt and airborne dust at the same time. Dust holds moisture against a surface and salt does the corroding, and the combination is harder on enclosures, hinges and heat exchangers than a purely coastal exposure.
For a business that shows up as condenser fins clogging and corroding, enclosure seals perishing and isolator mechanisms stiffening. We specify sealed entries and corrosion resistant hardware outdoors, and for anything with a heat exchanger it is worth putting a cleaning interval in the maintenance schedule rather than waiting for the performance to drop.
Sealed enclosures
Dust ingress plus bay air is what kills outdoor gear here, so gland and seal selection matters.
Heat exchangers
Condensers and compressors near the saleyards and quay foul faster and lose efficiency before they fail outright.
Scheduled checks
On commercial sites an inspection interval costs less than an unplanned shutdown in February.
The residential pocket, which is a different job entirely
The houses here are 1920s to 1960s weatherboard and brick on 450 to 650 square metre blocks with modest side setbacks that usually allow a cable run. That stock has the same issues as any of that era: original or partly upgraded boards, missing RCD protection and circuit counts that never anticipated a modern kitchen.
Roofs are corrugated steel and concrete tile hips at 22 to 30 degrees, which is a steeper pitch than the northern estates and works well for domestic solar. A refit with RCBOs starts around $800, a full board replacement runs toward $3,500, and asbestos backing is common in anything up to the mid 1980s.
Older domestic boards
The residential pocket carries the same original protection as the rest of northern Geelong, and it gets the same first job.
Steeper roofs
22 to 30 degree pitches here perform better in winter than the shallow 20 degree estate roofs further south.
Workable setbacks
Modest side access on these blocks is usually enough for a cable run without going through the roof.
Fifty five kilometres, and how commercial work is scheduled
North Geelong is about 55km from our Altona workshop, one of the closer parts of the region for us. We book work here in blocks and give you the week rather than the hour, which for commercial jobs is usually how it needs to run anyway because access, shutdowns and production schedules have to be agreed in advance.
What we will not do is claim a same day or 24 hour response from this distance. For a planned installation, a compliance program or a solar project, that is not a limitation. Electrical under REC 37223, solar and battery under SAA S3962281, with a 100% workmanship guarantee.
Planned shutdowns
Work that needs power off is scheduled around production rather than dropped on a business at short notice.
Blocks of work
Grouping jobs in the northern suburbs keeps travel from being carried by a single site.
Documentation
Certificates, board schedules and test records handed over, which is what an insurer or an auditor will ask for.
On the ground
What we see in North Geelong
- Three phase supplies as the norm rather than the exception, with phase loading that has drifted as machinery was added over the years.
- Older industrial distribution on restored sites like Federal Mills, serviceable but largely undocumented until somebody maps it.
- Wide span warehouse roofs with no shading, which are the strongest commercial solar prospects anywhere in the region.
- Outdoor equipment taking salt off Corio Bay and dust from the port and saleyards at the same time, which ages it faster than either alone.

North Geelong questions
Yes, and in North Geelong that is most of it. Three phase distribution, machinery circuits, warehouse lighting, tenancy fit outs, exit and emergency lighting testing and commercial solar are normal work for us. The residential pocket here gets the same domestic service as anywhere else, but the suburb is mostly industrial and the work reflects that.
Often it is the best kind of roof there is. Wide unbroken spans with no residential shading and a daytime load profile that matches generation is close to ideal. What has to be checked first is structural capacity, purlin spacing and the condition of the roof sheets, along with DC run lengths and whether the existing board can take the connection. We assess that before drawing a layout.
Because North Geelong gets salt off Corio Bay and dust from the port and saleyards together. Dust holds moisture against the metal and the salt does the damage, so enclosures, hinges, isolator mechanisms and condenser fins age faster than at an inland site. Sealed entries, corrosion resistant hardware and a cleaning interval for heat exchangers make a measurable difference.
Yes, and it is worth doing before anything is added. Older industrial buildings here commonly have sub mains and boards installed under superseded standards, extended several times, with no current documentation. We trace and label the distribution, identify what each board serves and give you a schedule. After that, adding a machine or a tenancy is a straightforward calculation.
No, and we would rather be clear about it. We are about 55km away at Altona and we book Geelong region work in blocks with a week committed rather than an hour. For a production breakdown you need someone local. For planned installation work, compliance testing, solar and distribution upgrades, being scheduled in advance is how those jobs run anyway.
Longer than a domestic one. Powercor is the distributor here and for our own area, so the process is familiar, but larger connections carry conditions and lead times that a 6.6kW house system does not. We lodge the application early rather than at installation, because on a commercial project the approval, not the install, is usually what sets the date.
