The short answer

Detached garages and rear sheds

A lot of Hoppers Crossing homes have an attached single garage that has quietly become storage, and the car parks in front of a detached garage or colorbond shed further back. That is where the charger needs to be, and it is a submain rather than a circuit.

Underground conduit runs $60 to $120 per metre once trenching, cable, backfill and reinstatement are counted. The cost changes a lot depending on whether we are crossing lawn, pavers or a concrete driveway. Overhead runs along a fence line are cheaper where the property allows them, and we will show you both options at the quote.

    Test it first. If the shed submain is adequately sized and protected, the charger install becomes a fraction of the cost.

  • Underground run

    Priced per metre and by surface. Crossing a driveway costs considerably more than crossing lawn.

  • Subboard at the shed

    Often the tidiest answer where the shed also needs power points, lighting and a welder circuit sorted at the same time.

Informal shed wiring, and what we find

Detached sheds and garages here were frequently wired by a previous owner or a helpful relative. Extension leads buried in the ground, unprotected cable stapled to a fence, no RCD anywhere, and a circuit fed off a power point in the laundry. We see it most weeks.

None of that can carry an EV charger, and most of it should not be carrying anything. Where we find it, the honest quote includes bringing the shed supply up to standard. That is not upselling, it is the difference between a compliant installation with a Certificate of Electrical Safety and a fire risk with a car plugged into it.

RCD retrofits on 1980s and 1990s boards

Boards from this era typically have miniature circuit breakers but no residual current protection on every final subcircuit. The new EV circuit must have RCD protection of the correct type for DC leakage under AS/NZS 3000 regardless, so the question is whether you fix the rest of the board while the cover is off.

In most cases you should. Retrofitting RCD protection across the board while we are already working in it is dramatically cheaper than a separate visit later, and it is the single most effective safety improvement available in a house of this age. Board work runs $800 to $3,500 depending on scope, quoted separately from the charger.

What single phase actually delivers here

Hoppers Crossing is single phase Powercor supply, so 32A and about 7.4kW is the practical ceiling. That is 40 to 50km of range per hour. On a big block family home where the car does the school run, the shops and a commute, an overnight charge on a cheap tariff covers everything with room to spare.

The broad unshaded roofs here also mean a lot of homes have solar. A smart charger with a current transformer on the main supply will divert surplus generation to the car during the day, which suits households where someone is home or the car sits on weekends. We set both modes up at commissioning so you are not left reading a manual.

Three phase is uncommon in residential Hoppers Crossing. It turns up occasionally on properties that once ran a serious workshop, and where it exists a 22kW capable charger at $2,500 to $3,000 plus is worth discussing. Converting a single phase supply purely for charging speed is not something we recommend to a household with one car and an overnight parking spot.
